 Divisions

Children will be divided into groups depending on their age and ability.

  • Junior Division for children born in 2016 – 2019
  • Senior Division for children born in 2012 – 2015
  • Adaptive Individual Athletes for all children born in 2012 – 2019

Mixed Relay Teams

This race will also include a Mixed Relay Team category in both the Junior and Senior Division.

In the mixed relay, teams of three children collaborate to complete the full triathlon distance. Instead of each child doing all three events (swim, bike, and run), they divide the disciplines. For instance, Child A might swim, Child B bikes, and Child C runs. Alternatively, one child may elect to do two of the events, with another child only doing one. This format allows children to focus on their strengths or work around any discomfort with a particular event. Teams can be formed with friends or family members, offering flexibility for participation, particularly if a child prefers to specialize in one segment.

Adaptive Individual Athletes

Children are eligible to enroll in the Adaptive Individual Athlete Division if they have a physical disability or are recognized by their school as requiring Special Needs ESE (Exceptional Student Education) with an IEP (Individualized Education Program).  Please contact us in advance to discuss any special needs of which you would like us to be aware so that our professional race management company is able to better accommodate them on Race Day.

Swim / Wade

Swim course map

  • 75 yards = 3 lengths (Junior + Adaptive)
  • 150 yards = 6 lengths (Senior)

Athletes will swim in the heated pool at Gifford Aquatic Center while parents/guardians, relatives and friends cheer them on from the sideline deck.

Novice swimmers or non-swimmers are able to walk on the bottom of the pool for this portion of the event. Kickboards, noodles, and lifejackets are available and can be used during the swim. However, no inflatable arm floats are allowed.

Get ready with the FREE swim clinics

Lifeguards will be in the water with the participants at all times.

Bike / Ride

Bike course map

  • 1.0 mile (Junior + Adaptive)
  • 2.0 miles (Senior)

Athletes will cycle on a flat closed course supported with volunteers and Indian River County Deputies. Juniors will complete a single 1-mile loop and Seniors will complete two 1-mile loops.

Due to past accidents, this year training wheels will not be allowed. Have your child set a goal to ride a two-wheeler on Race Day!

Get ready with the FREE bike clinics

Bikes and helmets are required.  If your child does not have this equipment and you have done your best to borrow these, then we might be able to help you! See here for more details.

Run / Walk

Run course map

  • 0.5 mile (Junior + Adaptive)
  • 1.0 mile (Senior)

The course follows the perimeter of the soccer/football and baseball fields, and includes grass, packed dirt, and pavement.  For hydration, water will be provided at the Finish Line and approximately at the halfway turnaround point of the Run Course for the Senior Division.  All athletes are encouraged to leave a filled water bottle where their bike is located within the Transition Area (which they can access after their Swim and Bike segments).

Get ready with the FREE run clinics

Volunteers will be posted along the course to ensure athletes stay on route.

Awards

Each athlete who crossed the finish line will be awarded a medal

Additionally, trophies will be awarded to:

  • Top 3 Male and Female athetes form each of the ages 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13 years old (based on athlete age on Dec 31st of this year) [48 Trophies]
  • Top Mixed Relay Team in the Junior and Senior Divisions [2 Trophies]
  • Top Male & Female Junior and Senior Adaptive Athletes [4 Trophies]

Lodging

For out-of-towners, you will need to arrive on Friday before Race Day for Bike Check-In.  In addition to Friday night accommodation, you may also wish to plan another overnight stay in Vero Beach after the event, because every year on the same date is the Vero Beach Christmas Parade – which does not commence until 6:00pm (well after our Rotary Kids Triathlon has been completed).

See here for information on several hotel options in Vero Beach.

Safety and Security

All participants will receive an anklet with an electronic timing chip (so their split and total times can be accurately reported).  In addition, each participant and their parent/guardian will receive an ID wristband for secure child pick-up in the Kids Corral, which is where the children will converge after crossing the Finish Line (see 5th Map under the Race Course Tab).

Under the race direction of Game On! Race Events, this event will be Safe, Fun, and Professional for all athletes using USA Triathlon rules and guidelines (however this is NOT a USAT Sanctioned event).  Race Central and the Swim segment will be located at the Gifford Aquatic Center.

Since your child’s bike (and any other equipment they would like to store) will be checked-in to the Transition Area on Friday before Race Day, there will be overnight security patrolling the area.
